Bumping this bug, if appropriate here.

The original request is still valid, namely to add functionality to maintain a 
s-u-m unique script in grub.d.
I would elaborate and suggest that s-u-m should allow toggling between an s-u-m 
crafted menu and the one created by update-grub.

I do this manually today by copying the menuentry blocks from grub.cfg
into 40_custom, etc. but many Ubuntu users shouldn't have to track
down/learn all of the idiosyncracies of GRUB2 internals.

Bottom line - we want to produce a customized, friendlier boot menu for our 
specific circumstance.
Example - my computer illiterate relatives don't care about the Ubuntu version 
number and should be informed exactly which flavor of Windows is also present.
