I had the same problem on my Sony Vaio P. Tried several USB sticks and all available boot disk creators on Windows and Linux. 9.04 worked created on 9.04.
The solution: Add memmap=1K#0x7f800000 to the Boot Options on startup. Therefore press ESC as soon as the purple screen appears.
