This affects me too. I'm using 10.10, 460 GTX. However I found that nouveau kernel module is still loaded on boot even if nvidia proprietary driver is installed and activated. When I blacklisted nouveau the issue looks to be fixed.
It is needed to create /etc/modprobe.d/disable-nouveau.conf file with the following two lines added: blacklist nouveau options nouveau modeset=0 After doing this I didn't meet this issue for 3 days.
