Darran I'm also having the same problem as Stephanie after downloading a number of updates around the time she reported the issue. I'm using the menu options Applications; Internet; A Web Browser to try to load Firefox (version 3.6.6) which results in the error message reported. I know the internet is still accessible as I go through the Ubuntu Help Centre icon and then using the Free Support link I can access the internet with normal functionality. It would be useful to regain the normal access.
