hi Curtis, Finally got time to follow up on this. Did not burn and boot a full Gparted CD (sorry), but pulled Gparted 0.7 from the Natty repositories. That installed fine and it does see the DMraid correctly. I could shrink an NTFS partition, fill the space with a new primary and format that to ext4. Then removed the new partition. All without a hitch, and it seemed to be quicker too reading the disks's contents.
