Hi.

Please note that my knowledge of Ubuntu/linux is terribly lacking. I am
not sure is this is the same bug, but it kind of looks related at the
least.

I've hit this bug twice, which means I had to reinstall Lucid twice. In
order to replicate it, I would have to install it yet again - which I
will do only if it is necessary: which it might not be.

I've setup a live-persistent external HDD. I'm trying to install several
math programs (for use in my section at work). While Gnome is still the
'active' desktop, I've also added KDE and LXDE: several programs seem to
be kind of native to those, and installing them helped (ex. for KDE
saving of program configurations, and also for KDE help-files to work).

However. When trying to add XFCE4, 'desktop-base' came into play. It
seems as if it is trying to save changes (?the update?) to files which
in the live-persistence are read-only. This is reminiscent of of init-
whatever, and vmlinux-whatever when I first tried out Ultimate Edition
2.7 (or was it 2.6? sorry), and tried to upgrade it. An OpenSUSE-user
friend helped me then (something with 'symlinks'?), and later (soon) you
guys fixed that via another update.

The effect of this is that Synaptic will eternally try and 'repair' the
'error'. I couldn't figure out how to get rid of it, so the only
alternative was to reinstall. Which sucked. The second time round,
something else (I do not know what), also slipped in the dependency to
'desktop-base'. Again I had to reinstall. Which has turned me into a
paranoid searcher of 'desktop-base' whenever I use Synaptic.

While not critical, it was an identical experience as with the
init/vmlinux problems I had with Lucid-Synaptic at the start.

I hope this report will be of use.

Regards,
R.
