On two different systems (both 10.04 32-bit) I am able to consistently
make basic256 lock up.

To reproduce, open BASIC-256 version 0.9.2, click in the large code
editing box, and type "color red" (without quotes). After pressing the
last letter 'd', basic256 freezes. Attempts to close the application
cause a "The window 'Untitled - BASIC-256' is not responding." dialog to
be displayed. The same seems to happen with green and blue but not
yellow or white. Black seems inconsistent.
