I guess I should add more details. The hard drive got a couple partitions added, and the installer was copying files. While the files were copying I had picked a username, machine name, and password. Oh and I told it what my time zone is. Then the installer was showing me a slide show of all the beautiful things Ubuntu will someday let me do. Then I got some sort of cryptic message about an error that could be an overheated component or a dirty or scratched CD. I scratched my head over that, and told it to continue. Finally I got a polite message telling me that the installer crashed, and that I should create a bug report here, so that's what I did.
