Just FYI, I just installed a new Western Digital WD20EVDS 2 TB
rotational drive and got this exact same behavior - lost interrupts etc.
I had created a full-disk EXT4 partition and the corruption was so bad
that whenever the machine tried to mount the FS, it caused a kernel oops
which killed the whole system. I finally had to dd if=/dev/zero over
the start of the drive to kill the partition table so it would stop
trying to mount it on boot.

Anyway, disabling udisks-probe-ata-smart via dpkg-divert fixed things
perfectly and it works fine now.

This code needs to go! It should never have been added, smartmontools
has been around forever with no problems but this code is killing drives
left and right. It's not worth the small benefit of notifying desktop
users of drive problems.
