Kamal's patch and Jose's instructions are working for me on Gateway NV59 11h with BIOS 1.09 and GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_backlight=vendor" (I did not update my BIOS as I can't figure out where the Gateway BIOS updates are.)
I vote for including the patch in mainline.
