Jan: I believe the origin of the gap was to ensure that any window manager icons were still easily visible. Now that the default theme has the bubble semi-transparent and the default window-manager icons moved to the left-hand side this is probably less of an issue. It is of course intention, but you do raise a point that other make not think it to be so!
