I forgot to add that I'm on a 32-bit system. The weird thing is that in sites like www.jal.com and www.1g1g.com the characters are displayed correctly, but the subtitles in TED.com do not. Also, hovering the mouse over the "CC" (closed captions) button in youtube (like in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diTpeYoqAhc&cc=1 ) shows only squares. However Japanese text looks fine when hovering on all the other buttons in the same page.
