I can add that the freeze is no longer present when using 2.6.35-22, but then another issue comes up: Screen blinking/flickering. It is only the laptop screen that flickers/blinks as the external monitor is not blinking/flickering. flickering/blinks = Screen goes black for a very short period of time (less than a second) and comes back.
