Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Within a few seconds of starting to actually play back a file (tested
with both .aac and .mp3), my whole computer becomes totally
unresponsive.

Running "top" in a terminal shows no unusual CPU usage.

The interface is so slow that clicking "pause" will do nothing
immediately, but as soon as the machine registers this click (could be
minutes), the computer comes back to life and as soon as this happens,
all applications come back - many of which are now reporting that they
have frozen/should they be closed etc.

I have actually had this problem since Lucid, and now on Maverick.

Thanks for your help.
Tristan
