Further info on status. The external USB drive was formatted as Fat32 as /dev/sdc1 and now has an msdos partition table. (This is in lieu of the three partitions it used to have. - one Windows XP and two Linux) An installation of Windows XP on /dev/sda1 was unaffected by the upgrade to 10.10. It appears undamaged, Also undamaged are three other data partitions on sda5 (/home), sda6, sda7.
