I am having this same problem on a Dell Latitude E6510 laptop, so certainly a different motherboard, but perhaps some of the same chipsets. I am running 64-bit Maverick.
This is happening multiple times per day and is completely debilitating. Have not found a way to recover the system without completely rebooting. I found numerous threads of kernel issues going back as far as 2007 that sound similar, but nothing conclusive in terms of a fix or even a reliable work-around.
