Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: fontconfig

This is a difference between an originally-Edgy installation and an
originally-Warty installation.

In particular, the bytecode hinting is disabled on my ex-Warty machine.
Since DejaVu Sans includes ligatures for fi, ff, ffi, and the autohinter
does not work properly with these characters (the fs completely change
shape), stuff generally looks terrible.

I *don't* have an /etc/fonts/local.conf, and this is not a per-user
problem as GDM and new user accounts see these incorrect settings.

I took a guess at the package, sorry if it's wrong.

** Affects: fontconfig (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Unconfirmed
