> Is this update-notifier existing in Debian Lenny?!

Yes, it does: http://packages.debian.org/stable/gnome/update-notifier
However you have to setup the cron job manually as described on the above page.
I i.e. have set up 'cron-apt' on my NAS with Lenny and configured exim4
(default MTA) to send me e-mail to my external account on updates available.
That works reliable.

At this occasion another deficiency/bug in Ubuntu's update-notifier:

despite I have configured to send e-mail to r...@localhost in
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades by uncommenting this line:

Unattended-Upgrade::Mail "r...@localhost";

root does not receive any e-mail notification. MTA here in Lucid is
postfix, which works fine for other cron-jobs.
