I've had this issue with various USB devices for years. Here's one example that used to work on older hardware with Ubuntu installs, but generally not with newer.
I have a SanDisk Sanza Clip mp3 player that I used to use with Rythmbox all the time, but like I said, doesn't work with most of my newer pc's. I think in some cases I was able to disable the ehci module, but I don't have that option anymore with the newer versions of Ubuntu. Attached is a copy of my lsusb -vvv When attaching the device, dmesg | tail outputs something like this: [ 1093.221007] usb-storage: device found at 6 [ 1093.221010] usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning [ 1098.204870] usb-storage: device scan complete [ 1119.534710] usb 2-1.8: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6 [ 1119.893568] usb 2-1.8: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6 [ 1126.249518] usb 2-1.8: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6 [ 1126.617741] usb 2-1.8: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6 [ 1126.989293] usb 2-1.8: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6 [ 1127.276290] scsi 6:0:0:0: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery I followed some instructions I found in a forum and tried to: echo -n "0000:00:1d.0" > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd/unbind but all I managed to do was disable my mouse and keyboard (that was fun :P ) ** Attachment added: "lsusb_vvv.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/256767/+attachment/1754478/+files/lsusb_vvv.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/256767 Title: USB devices work, but constant syslog errors "unable to enumerate USB device on port 5" -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
