Bug still exists in Ubuntu 10.10.
I have Lenovo 3000 V200 notebook with Intel VGA (VGA compatible controller:
Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) )

I did changes to GRUB file mentioned above, but it didn't helped :-(

My monitor is detected as "Unknown". Max resolution available is 1360x768.
The only difference against the comment by InterAnt written on 2010-05-02 is
that he had:
I/O warning : failed to load external entity
"/usr/share/ddccontrol-db/monitor/SAM0368.xml"
And I had:
I/O warning : failed to load external entity
"/usr/share/ddccontrol-db/monitor/SEC4241.xml"

I looked at /var/log/syslog and while trying to detect the monitor via
System->Preferences->Monitors i got in syslog such message:
Dec 3 22:57:19 enigma kernel: [ 9146.246038] [drm:drm_edid_block_valid]
*ERROR* EDID checksum is invalid, remainder is 230
Dec 3 22:57:19 enigma kernel: [ 9146.246046] [drm:drm_edid_block_valid]
*ERROR* Raw EDID:
(and here goes raw output in 8 lines)

Please, help - xorg.conf was removed from Ubuntu, everything should be
automatic and such problems are very annoying
