Actually, when I have more than three 'big' torrents to download (let's say >4GB per torrent), the application window freezes completely and the system becomes unresponsive (quite slow in overall). My work-around is to pause all torrents quickly when transmission is launched, and then I start them one by one once the previous finished verifying the data. Although this bug is closed, it should be considered to back-port for the long term releases. Hope this helps.
