I tested again with the latest mainline kernel build
(2.6.37.999-generic), and the link came up immediately in gigabit mode,
so this appears to be fixed upstream.

$ tail /var/log/kern.log | grep -C1 e1000e
Dec  4 10:29:24 serenity kernel: [  116.936360] ata3: EH complete
Dec  4 10:30:07 serenity kernel: [  160.041407] e1000e: eth0 NIC Link is Up
1000 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow Control: RX/TX
Dec  4 10:30:07 serenity kernel: [  160.042227] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth0:
link becomes ready
Dec  4 10:30:17 serenity kernel: [  170.040195] e1000e: eth0 NIC Link is Down

(The link didn't go down until I unplugged the ethernet cable.)
