It happen to be that I have to use Ctrl+Alt+F8 and not F7 on this
machine, but it would fail after switching to a tty.

When I said I get a gdm login, I really meant a login screen, not an
unlock screen. Of course I don't want my screen to be unlocked when the
machine wakes up from suspend, but I don't expect to have to log in
again, otherwise there's absolutely no point in suspending vs. halting
the system.
