I'm not sure I did this correctly, but here are the steps I followed
after turning on my computer:

(login sound plays as screen comes up)
1. I log into my account
2. I turn on Rythembox to verify if sound is working. No sound comes through
speakers.
3. I follow the steps one at a time:
echo autospawn = no >> ~/.pulse/client.conf

killall pulseaudio
(Music starts playing immediately)

LANG=C pulseaudio -vvvv > ~/pulseverbose.log 2>&1
(I can no longer use this window, as I'm left on a new line without
"name&computername:" prompt)

4. I open a separate terminal and type: pacmd set-log-time 1
(I get a "Welcome to PulseAudio! Use "help" for usage information."
5. Since sound is playing now, I can't repeat the failure. I do try to change
the volume via the sound applet, this does nothing. Neither does pressing mute
or unmute. What does work is changing the volume on Rythembox itself. I then
press Ctr-C according to the directions.

I've attached pulseverbose.log

** Attachment added: "Log for pulseverbose"
