Public bug reported:

after suspend or hibernate the machine fails to resume: blank screen and fan
running at high speed.
the only way out is brutal power off.

the problem affects Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell inspiron. I tried (with no success):
- kernels 2.6.35-22 as well as 2.6.35-23
- all the workarounds in bugs reports #578673, #625364, and #681877
- both the generic graphic card driver and the ATI/AMD FGLRX proprietary driver

Similar problems affect similar machines, see
