Sorry that the first line wasn't clear.

1. I meant that sound does not work in TvTime, Amarok and SMplayer among a few 
others.
2. I cannot start the kmix mixer applet
3. However, sound works in KMplayer. KMplayer also gives multiple options for 
sound output which allowed for the testing and results under different options

It may be pertinent here: Under Settings -> System Settings ->
Multimedia -> Phonon -> Audio output -> Music: Everything other than
Jack Audio Connection Kit is greyed out (This device is currently not
available (either it is disconnected or the drivers are not loaded))
which makes no sense as KMplayer is able to play everything using the
same devices.

I have selected ALSA using "$dpkg-reconfigure linux-sound-base" but even
other settings (OSS and default) give the same results.
