I have related issues with maverick. Playing sound with rhythmbox, exaile, totem or dragon player on the airport express works pretty good, though it is sometimes a little unstable. The only strange thing I notice is that there is a constant data transfer to the AE (approx. 100kb/s) even when no sound is playing. All these applications use or are configured to use gstreamer. Unfortunately mplayer, xine and vlc are not usable as the sound is completely choppy. This is a big issue for me as sound and video output are not in sync when using the AE. But the latter players are the only ones I know were you can adjust the synchronization.
