Hi and sorry for not changing the status of this bug earlier... I didn't know I could/should do it! :-/
This issue has been solved in Ubuntu 10.10 as far as I can see. Ubuntu 10.10 is using ProFTPD version 1.3.2e and it works perfectly! Thanks for all the input and help that has been given by so many.
