I just discovered another method to create this freeze:
Steps to reproduce:
1 - Make sure the laptop/netbook is not connected to power and the network
cable is not connected.
2 - Boot and login to Ubuntu
3 - Connect a network cable

If a nework cable is connected when the laptop/netbook is not connected
to power, the computer freezes.
