The same thing happens with Feisty Daily (04/08/07) i386.  Safe graphics
mode does work.  I wanted to get logs from /var/log, so what I did was
use safe graphics mode, and then kill gdm/switch the driver to nv.  I
then symlinked /var/log to a real drive I could access after the crash.
Here are the logs I gathered for what happens when 'nv' starts, which
aren't too revealing from what I can see.  I also put the xorg.conf in
there that was used.
