It doesn't seem to work by default for all the languages. I did some test on my Feisty laptop (English Canada), and it seems the thesaurus only works if my document is set to be English (US) or English (UK). That was set, in OpenOffice.org, via the menu in tools --> options --> languages settings --> languages --> default languages for documents --> western
