Have you tried installing Ubuntu using rEFIt? Link:

Before installing, read these topics before installing. It explains a
possible reason for this problem and a workaround by installing the
bootloader to the same partition as Ubuntu instead of replacing the
Mac's own bootloader. After this you can either use rEFIt to boot into
Mac OS X or Ubuntu, but I've seen discussions that some people who have
created the partition for Ubuntu using Bootcamp, go to the boot menu by
using the 'option' key and selecting the Windows icon, but I haven't
tried that myself.
