Public bug reported:

With an active VPN connection, the connection's item in the indicator
menu (VPN Connections > VPN Name) shows a check mark. Clicking on the
item closes the indicator menu and removes the check mark. This could be
interpreted as a disconnect or failed disconnect (as the indicator icon
still shows the VPN lock overlay).

network-manager-gnome:
  Installed: 0.8.3+git.20101209t081952.0330eca-0ubuntu3

** Affects: network-manager-applet (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
