No luck. The command sudo modprobe -r snd_hda_intel && sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel model=m6 didn't work from the console, because it reported snd_hda_intel as "in use".
So I ran 'init 1' to get to text mode (and hopefully stop any programs using snd_hda_intel), ran the above command, then and ran 'init 2' to return to graphics mode.
