Confirmed on Maverick with 2.6.35-25-generic. Using xfce4-sensors-plugin the update interval can be specified manually, right down to one second. The HDD LED flashes as you'd expect but the drive heads can also be heard jumping around. Why? Something seems wrong about that.
Same result with "hddtemp /dev/sda" on the command line.
