To be adding more info: sometimes "restart network-manager" does not
work and I need to unload/reload the two kernel modules iwl3945 and
iwlcore so that I can get a connection again.

It seems to be most prone to crash when the signal strength is < 60% and
when there are many outgoing connections at the same time, e.g.
bittorrent traffic or internet surfing. It's actually (almost) stable
when there are few connections, such as a single download by wget. I
suppose that could lead to testing of some sort...
