This also happens to me, I'm using Blender 2.42a binary build with a non-hardware accelerated system. However, a few months back this was not a problem. But I reformatted by installation, and now it crashes very often. I only installed the blender from the Ubuntu repositories. I haven't tried downloading the actual binaries manually.
