Sorry for the false alarm, I found an intermittent hardware problem. For some reason the wireless worked on the windows system and failed on Ubuntu. I finally had a failure on the windows system and fixed the hardware problem. It didn't make sense that the updates installed caused the problem, but the problem started right after the update.
