This is a nasty looking bug indeed! And quite irresponsible from Canonical to continue shipping this bug. A 10.10.1 would have been a wiser decision.
Luckily I was already alert that Ubuntu could ship data-loss installer bugs (faulty grub or mbr, etc.) so I take special care to first check out the forums.
