I also see strange behaviour with sync to vblank enabled. 
This are the symptoms that I see:
 · animations look jerky
 · openGL games also suffer from this symptoms
 · everything is slower than it should be.

Even with sync to vblank disabled animations are not smooth and OpenGL apps are 
also affected.
It looks like some frames get dropped.

For testing I used a daily desktop image (Natty) and updated compiz and unity.
I tested this on an Intel x4500HD (g45) chip.

Maybe it is possible that compiz supports  swap events if the driver
supports it?
