I was trying to see if the noise was proportional to the volume of what
I was listening to, and... I don't think it is.

But more interestingly, if I turn the volume way down with, say,
mplayer's volume controls, so that I can't hear it, and then crank the
volume up on my USB audio thing, I can hear the sound from mplayer,
horribly garbled, in the left channel.  So it's not white noise.
