This is probably the wrong package... I wasn't sure whether to file this
under Gnome, or PolicyKit, or what.
But this is super annoying and I would really like to see this fixed.
application dialogs do NOT raise when opened. This is just plain bad
from a usability point of view. I don't know if this was a decision
made in good faith to try to keep applications from polluting user
desktops or perhaps an oversight, or maybe just a bug, but it certainly
lessens usability.
Now, don't get me wrong, if I have, say, FireFox open, but in the
background, and FireFox fires off a popup dialog, perhaps raising that
is not the best idea, and having it steal focus from whatever app is in
the foreground. BUT some popups need to be opened on top of everything
every time.
Good example, the shutdown popup dialog. When I click the Power widget,
and select Restart or Shutdown, and it fires a dialog asking me if I am
sure I want to perform the action and shut down all running programs,
THAT popup NEEDS TO BE opened on top of everything. Not buried
underneath several open windows, ESPECIALLY since that popup does NOT
open an item on the task bar at the bottom of the screen.
See the attached screenshot and you'll notice that the Shutdown Dialog
Popup box actually opened UNDER one application and on top of another...
That's just not cool. I've also had instances where it opened below
everything and I had to manually close out everything trying to find the
popup so I could actually shut my computer down.
So, I would really like to see 2 things here:
A: that this behaviour gets fixed in Maverick (and Lucid and Karmic if
necessary)
B: that this behaviour is not present in Natty, either in Unity or Gnome. I
have a feeling that this will be even MORE annoying to our users if it's
present in Unity.
