I have just started having this problem after doing an "apt-get autoremove" on my Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit system (Acer timelinex 3820TG with the dual GPU "switchable graphics").

All the while the hard drive churns away, and the cursor blinks on the screen; then an error message flashes up too quickly to read and then the plymouth splash screen appears. The hard drive churning and the mounted filesystem notice make me wonder if it's related to the disk mount.
