I can confirm that unless eth0, eth1, etc are commented out my laptop
also takes ages to boot up.

What happens is that the init script tries to start all the network devices 
that are uncommented. They are mostly configured to use dhcp.
If no dhcp server is available on the network then the bootup will pause until 
the dhcp timeout is reached.
