I had a look at the symbols files of other Ubuntu packages (libqt4, libxml2, libcairo2). They all only include the upstream version. So, I think the symbols files in the previous diff file (i.e. using version 2.7.8 instead of 2.7.8-0ubuntu1) had been correct.
Here is the updated diff file, which includes symbols files with upstream version and the updated changelog.
