I see this as well.  I have a two NICs, one static, the other dhcp (with
some additional lines in /etc/network/interfaces, to run iptables
commands after the dhcp NIC comes up).

It all seems to work OK, but nm-applet keeps vacillating between saying
everything is fine, to "no network".

I sure wish there was some supported way to just disable NM on this
machine.  I love NM on my laptop with a single NIC, but it's
superfluous, and just gets in the way on my desktop machine that is
dual-homed.
