Despite the fact that Ubuntu has yet to clearly define an audience for the default design, the following assumptions can probably be made relatively easily:
1) Ubuntu's technology base tends to attempt and attract users who might be familiar with the more mainstream operating systems available. 2) Ubuntu, in terms of press and coverage, is often heralded as an operating system to 'change' to from your current commercial operating system. To this end, considering that both commercial mainstream operating systems use system sounds and other audio feedback related devices, it would be absolutely absurd to suggest the default sound events to be turned off. Remember, when people lay down blanket statements such as 'most people', they are actually dealing with a specific audience. Ubuntu as well, although its design parameters have yet to embrace this fully, deals with an implied audience.
