Similar issue can occur in 10.10 Dell Inspiron 1545; I believe it can be reproduced by closing the display nearly all the way and hesitating. It seems the suspend can get caught in a limbo between that and being active. The power light stays steady and the cooling fan comes on. Open display shows a black screen.
