I am a heavy user of bcm43xx (in the incarnation of Airport Extreme on
an iBook G4), and unencrypted networks have always worked well. However,
I don't use ndiswrapper, but the free driver that comes with the kernel
(so I just need to install the firmware with bcm43xx-fwcutter).

Chris, since you also seem to have this problem with the native driver,
can you please upgrade to latest feisty and attach /var/log/daemon.log
after a failed connection attempt?
