This is weird. I would expect -- if you are running framebuffer and your card supports at least 1024x768 -- that 'vga=792' would do the trick (BTW, this is 1024x768, 16M colours). And the dmesg output you show does not show a framebuffer device in use -- the console is a standard 24x80.
